To do this technique, simply paint your piece in the desired color and then go back with a sanding block or piece of sand paper and sand down the edges slightly, to give that weathered look.

Do you distress before or after top coat?
Instead of distressing after the last coat of paint, wait until the first coat of poly is dry before distressing. This removes one extra step of sanding the paint smooth and removing the dust, but it makes the final finish smooth, and gives you a chance to distress the edges.

There is a potential downside to a poly finish that isn’t an issue with wax. Poly topcoats can sometimes pull tannins from the wood through the porous chalk paint, creating yellowish (or sometimes pink) spots. This doesn’t always happen, but when it does it’s almost always with white or very light paint.

Don’t let it dry and then try to add more. Once the area is clean, add a really light coat of paint and let it dry for 48 hours.

A blotchy appearance can come from either a poor painting job, waxing in sections and not blending the areas in the final phase, or sometimes – over wiping wax off and causing some areas to seem buffed and other areas not.
